Earth Day is Friday, April 22nd, and the Earth Day Network has an ambitious goal – plant 7.8 billion new trees worldwide by April 22, 2020, just in time for Earth Day’s 50th anniversary.
So we need to get busy – that’s just four years away!
Why trees? Well, in addition to having great aesthetic appeal, trees are also one of the major workhorses in cleaning our air and benefiting our environment:
- They combat climate change. Our leafy friends absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In fact, in a single year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 26,000 miles.
- They give us clean air. By filtering out nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and ozone, trees absorb odors and pollutants, giving us fresher, cleaner air to breathe.
- They help communities. Trees can contribute to economic as well as environmental sustainability for communities by providing food, energy and income.
