Are you interested in an evergreen tree that is perfectly suited to northern Arizona’s unique weather and wind patterns? One that provides shelter for local birds and small mammals throughout the year? Is a fast grower, but never loses its shapely figure?
Let me introduce you to the awesome Austrian Pine.
There’s a couple of reasons I want to make the case for the Austrian Pine this particular week (June 1-7, 2026). The first is that this is probably the last few weeks that you can plant this tree without having issues of transplant shock. Once the temps are into the high 80s, you’ll want to wait until the fall to plant.
The other reason is that our 7-gallon Austrian Pine is on sale this week for just $75, making it a great time to add one to your home.
Why is the Austrian Pine the perfect tree for northern Arizona? Here are a few highlights:
- “Bulletproof” Hardiness: Austrian Pines effortlessly survive extreme winter temperatures, severe droughts, and high-altitude climates, the very conditions we have in the high desert.
- Soil Tolerance: They thrive in Flagstaff’s often poor, rocky, or highly alkaline soils, plus they can withstand road salt.
- Good looks: Austrian Pines have thick, lush, dark-green foliage all the way to the ground, providing a full, classic “Christmas tree” look that many other pines lose as they mature. And boy do they grow quickly – anywhere from 12 to 28 inches a year.
- Good for local wildlife: Their dense branches shelter birds and small mammals year round, while their seeds provide food during the winter months.
So if you are thinking about adding a tree or two to your yard, consider the Austrian Pine – tough enough for Flagstaff, beautiful enough for any yard.
