From the land down under comes a forgiving fern with thick, dark, shiny leaves that flow from it like a fountain. Delicate looking, but less finicky than many of its fellow ferns, the the Austral Gem Fern (asplenium dimorphum x difforme) is a hybrid that is perfect for the fern-challenged.
Developed in Australia, Austral Gem is from the same genus as other popular ferns, like the Birds Nest and Maidenhair. Unlike most ferns, however, it can thrive in a variety of conditions – and will even survive a missed watering or two. That’s not to say you shouldn’t keep its soil moist. But if you do let it dry out a bit, it’s not a death sentence. Just water it and it should bounce back. (Don’t overwater it however as this can lead to root rot).
And while most ferns are picky about having medium light conditions, Austral Gem can tolerate low, medium and bright levels of light.
Caring for Your Austral Gem Fern
- Light: Although it’s a flexible fern, Austral Gem does like medium light if that’s available. Some morning or late afternoon filtered sunlight would be lovely, but like most plants, avoid direct sunlight.
- Water: Just because Austral Gem is forgiving, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t appreciate moisture and humidity. Keep the soil moist (but not wet). While placing your plant on a tray of damp pebbles or misting it aren’t required, it probably would make you plant happier.
- Fertilizer: During the spring and summer, feed your Austral Gem about once a month with organic fertilizer. Stop feeding in winter, while the plant is “resting.”
